Holburne Museum, Bath

May 2025

"Geologies of Power"

A circle of abandoned limestone shaped by both chance and intention. Twelve crumbling Bath ashlar stones, found near the Holburne Museum, are arranged in a circle beneath a tree to create this quiet installation. Once overlooked, the stones are now reordered and adorned with gold leaf, echoing the wealth and display seen inside the Holburne Museum.

The traces of gold serve as a gesture towards opulence, built partly on profits from the transatlantic slave trade. Set beneath a tree, forming a circle, they act as experimental forms that question how meaning changes through placement and surface.

The installation invites us to consider what is valued, what is forgotten, and how histories are held in stone.

You are encouraged to pause and reflect.

How do I make sense of this place?
